Adoption Process and FAQs

ADOPTION PROCESS

Our goal is not simply to place dogs quickly. It’s to create lasting, successful adoptions.

Application → Interview → Meet & Greet → Trial → Adoption

Step 1: Submit an Application

  • Complete the adoption application

  • Applicants must:

    • Be 21+

    • Live in the DC metro area

    • Have landlord approval if renting

  • Applications help us determine compatibility, not first-come-first-served placement. We focus on quality matches rather than rushing adoptions. A “quality fit” means matching a dog with a home where both the dog and adopter can thrive. We do not require a specific type of home, yard, or lifestyle. Instead, we focus on compatibility, humane care, and setting everyone up for success.

Since our dogs live in foster homes, we know what environments help them feel comfortable and what may be stressful for them. We consider factors like activity level, noise, visitors, children or pets, time alone, and behaviors such as barking or high energy when making matches.

Step 2: Interview & Reference Checks

  • A volunteer will contact you for a one-on-one interview

  • We’ll discuss:

    • Lifestyle

    • Experience

    • Expectations

    • Existing pets

  • We will contact:

    • Your veterinarian (if applicable)

    • Landlord/property management (if renting)

    • Perform a public records check

Step 3: Meet Your Potential Match

  • Meet the dog and foster family

  • Learn about:

    • Personality

    • Energy level

    • Training progress

    • Household fit

  • Please note:

    • A meet-and-greet does not guarantee adoption

    • The requested dog may not be the best fit

Step 4: Two-Week In-Home Trial

This is one of Vindicated’s strongest differentiators

Why We Use a Trial Period

  • Dogs need time to decompress and adjust to a new environment. Our two-week trial helps ensure the dog and adopter are truly a good fit before finalizing the adoption.

  • Dog lives in your home for approximately two weeks

  • Rescue support remains available throughout the trial

  • Helps ensure long-term success for both dog and adopter

Step 5: Finalize the Adoption

  • Sign adoption agreement

  • Pay adoption fee

  • Welcome your new family member home permanently

DOG ADOPTION FEES

Adoption fees include:

  • A wellness visit at our vet

  • All mandatory vaccines (distemper, bordetella, and rabies)

Each dog in our program has passed behavioral assessments and temperament evaluations. We spend a great deal of time with our dogs to get to know them so we can better match them with a potential family.

Every VPBR dog has:

  • Had routine veterinary care

  • Had positive reinforcement training while in foster care

  • Were held for a minimum of 14 days to observe their behavior before being introduced to the public

  • Been spayed/neutered & microchipped
